Problems solved by technology

Due to the complexity of the vacuum swing adsorption process and the need for compression after the process, this method can be quite expensive, especially when producing small amounts of carbon monoxide

Embodiment 1

[0051] A 3 mm diameter, 10 feet long adsorbent bed was packed with commercially available 40 x 60 mesh activated carbon. The total weight of the adsorbent is about 5.4 grams. A feed stream containing 1% methane and 99% carbon monoxide was passed through the bed at -173°C and a pressure of 10 psig at a flow rate of 0.1 standard liters per minute. The methane concentration at the outlet of the bed was monitored using a total hydrocarbon analyzer. After the methane concentration started to rise rapidly, the methane concentration at the outlet of the bed remained below 1 ppm for about 343 minutes.

Embodiment 2

[0053] The experiment was performed using the column of Example 1 but at a feed pressure of 50 psig. The remaining conditions are the same as in Example 1. The methane concentration at the outlet of the bed remained below 1 ppm for 340 minutes.

Embodiment 3

[0055] About 250 grams of 6 * 8 purpose commercially available activated carbons are filled in a container with an inner diameter of about 1 inch. A feed containing 1% methane in carbon monoxide was fed to the above bed at a flow rate of 5 standard liters per minute at -173°C and a pressure of 50 psig. The methane concentration at the outlet of the bed is monitored. A methane concentration of less than 1 ppm was observed for about 217 minutes.

[0056] These examples show that relatively high hydrocarbon adsorption capacities can be obtained by adsorbing impurities from carbon monoxide at low adsorption temperatures.

Abstract

The present invention provides for a method for purifying a carbon monoxide-containing gas stream that contains hydrocarbon impurities, such as methane, by using a cryogenic temperature swing adsorption method, at cryogenic temperatures below -75 DEG C. The carbon monoxide-containing gas stream may be pre-purified by membrane separation or vacuum swing adsorption or cryogenic distillation.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application No. 60 / 714,561, filed September 7, 2005. technical field [0003] This invention relates to the purification of carbon monoxide-containing streams, and more particularly to the removal of low molecular weight hydrocarbons (such as methane) from carbon monoxide by cryogenic temperature adsorption. Background technique [0004] Carbon monoxide (CO) is a major building block in the chemical industry. In addition to being used as an intermediate in the production of acetic acid, formic acid and dimethylformamide, CO is also an important raw material for the preparation of phosgene. Phosgene is an important intermediate in many chemical industries, namely polycarbonates, polyurethanes, agrochemicals and fine chemicals (pharmaceuticals). In the preparation of phosgene, from the point of view of purity, recovery and environmental emissions, CH in CO 4 A ...
