Embodiment Construction

[0022] The basic design of the preferred embodiment of the aircraft is shown in Figures 1 to 3 . It comprises an elongated central compartment 1 arranged in the centre of a central disc 2 . A circular wing 3 is arranged concentrically around the central disc 2 . An annular gap 4 is provided concentrically around the central disk 2 and the chamber 1 . Twelve drives 101 to 112 are arranged between the spokes 5 along the inner side of the circular wing 3 . The design and function of these drives will be described in detail below.

[0023] like figure 2 and image 3 As shown, the aircraft of this embodiment provides seating for two pilots and six passengers. Cabin 1 also provides space for console 10 and entrance 11 . Four extendable legs 12 mounted to the cabin 1 are used for parking and sliding.

[0024] Two internal combustion engines 14 are arranged in the central disk 2 beside the nacelle 1 , each driving a generator 15 . The generator 15 provides power for driving...

Abstract

The aircraft comprises a central cabin (1), which is located in the center of a circular wing (3). Several pivotal electric drive units (102-112) are arranged in a gap between the central cabin and the circular ring. In hover flight, the drive units are pivoted to generate a lift. When the aircraft goes into cruise flight, the drive units are pivoted to generate a forward thrust. Attitude and movements of the aircraft can be controlled by individual or common adjustment of the thrust and pivot angle of the drive units. Due to its simple design, the aircraft is economic and safe in operation. Still it has a high payload for its size.

Description

[0001] Citations to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority from Swiss Patent Application 1959 / 99, filed October 26, 1999, and US Patent Application 09 / 475,325, filed November 30, 1999, the disclosures of which are incorporated herein by reference in their entirety. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to an aircraft and a method of operating the same, in particular to aircraft with electric motors. Background technique [0004] Modern aircraft must combine a high degree of safety and economy. Furthermore, they should be suitable for a wide variety of uses. [0005] A very general concept is provided by VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) type aircraft, such as that disclosed in US 5 419 514. Although various designs have been proposed in this field, none has yet provided an aircraft capable of meeting the requirements of modern commercial flight, especially from a safety and economic point of view.
