Embodiment Construction

[0037] An embodiment of the present invention is specifically described below.

[0038] In the present invention, a graded-index fiber (GIF) is connected or contacted to the front end of a single-mode fiber (SMF), which is a typical information transmission fiber. The outer diameter of GIF is preferably made equal to that of SMF (normally 125 μm). In this way, two optical fibers can be easily optically coupled, so that the number of parts required for fiber coupling can be reduced.

[0039]As initially introduced in the background description, if an existing GIF is used, the GIF may have the same diameter as the SMF. However, because such a GIF was not originally intended to function as a lens, it doesn't always perform best when accounting for aberrations or other similar issues that are important to lenses. In addition, since GIFs are normally composed of a 50 μm diameter core and a covering portion outside the core, GIFs are not designed to transmit light to the outer per...

Abstract

A lens function-including optical fiber is constituted by: at least one step-index optical fiber; and at least one gradient index optical fiber having an outer diameter equal to that of the step-index optical fiber and having a periodic length exhibiting a lens function, the gradient index optical fiber being joined or attached to an end surface of the step-index optical fiber. The present invention is especially effective in a single mode optical fiber which is typical of the step-index optical fiber. The gradient index optical fiber can be produced by an ion exchange method.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a single-mode optical fiber widely used in optical communication systems, in particular to optical coupling between optical fibers, optical coupling between optical fibers and optical devices, and the like. Background technique [0002] With the rapid popularization of the Internet in recent years, the requirement to improve the performance of optical fiber communication network is becoming more and more urgent. Optical communication wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) as a means of improving performance is developing rapidly. As a basic component of an optical communication system, a semiconductor laser is required as a light source, a photodiode is required as a photodetector, and an optical fiber, an optical amplifier, etc. are required as a light transmission medium. In addition, in WDM optical communication, optical devices with good wavelength selection capabilities are also required, such as optical signal splitters,...
