Problems solved by technology

[0010] However, existing extrusion methods still suffer from some limitations
For example, not all types of reactants are suitable for existing extrusion methods, because they cannot enter and mix into the reaction process, and thus cannot obtain a sufficiently uniform graft product

[0180] A. Reactor extruder

[0181] Use the HT-2000-F11-M-21-523-E2 " twin-screw extruder of Welding Engineers' company. This extruder uses up to 4 liquid additive injection ports along the axial direction. For two injection ports Equipped with a 1.5 inch (3.8 cm) thick separation plate for instrumentation, 5 inlets in barrel 3 and 4 inlets in barrel 4. For the twin-screw section Say the ratio of the overall length of the extruder to its diameter ("L / D") is 57: 1. The extruder also has a 3: 1 L / D single screw discharge section.

[0182] B. Extruder heating

[0183] The extruder is initially heated with two-zone thermal oil. The first zone includes the second to fifth barrels, and the second zone is used to heat the sixth to ninth barrels. The feed barrel is cooled with production water, and the die head is heated by electricity.

Abstract

Methods are disclosed for making graft copolymers. The methods comprise the steps of: (a) providing (i) an ethylene / propylene (EP) copolymer or other graftable polymer, (ii) an ethylenically unsaturated sulfur-, nitrogen- and / or oxygen-containing monomer, and (iii) an amount of an initiator sufficient to graft said monomer and EP copolymer or other graftable polymer; (b) introducing said EP copolymer or other graftable polymer into an extruder; (c) introducing said monomer into the extruder; (d) introducing said initiator into the extruder; wherein at least one of the above-identified reactants in (a) is introduced in the presence of a polar solvent; and (e) reacting said EP copolymer or other graftable polymer, monomer and initiator by operating said extruder, thereby forming the graft copolymer. This invention also relates to methods of making a dispersant viscosity index improver and methods for making a lubricating oil. This invention further relates to graft copolymer products made by the aforementioned methods.

Description

Background of the invention [0001] The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of graft copolymers. This method involves the use of polar solvents in the graft polymer extrusion reaction. The present invention also relates to a process for preparing grafted polymers useful as dispersant viscosity index improvers. [0002] Solvent grafting is a well known method of preparing polymers. Typically, the various reagents are added either in pure form or as solutions in the various solvents to one or more reactors containing the solvent. Furthermore, the desired polymer product often has to be separated from the reaction solvent and / or impurities by means of suitable purification steps. Therefore, these methods are limited by many factors, such as: the practicality, availability and cost of solvents, the practicality and economics of the purification steps required, and the environmental concerns posed by people with the waste materials associated with these pro...
