Embodiment Construction

[0021] As described above, the present invention relates to solutions and methods for configuring a wind turbine hub for transportation such that the dimensional envelope of the hub is reduced along at least one axis. In the known art, the outer dimensions of the hub are fixed during manufacture. In order to be transported to where the hub is to be installed, the hub must be loaded onto a trailer and transported by road for at least a certain distance. Public roads often have width restrictions to ensure the safety of other road users, and height restrictions to ensure that loads are not compromised by low bridges, gantry and other intersecting road structures along the route. For this reason, therefore, these width and height constraints are design and engineering constraints for wind turbine hubs. Accordingly, the present invention provides a device by which the outer dimensions of the hub can be reduced prior to transport, after which the hub can be reconfigured to its in-...

Abstract

A rotor hub of a wind turbine is provided that is configurable between a use or'run 'configuration and a transport configuration. In the transport configuration, the outer dimension of the rotor hub is reduced than in the operational configuration. The rotor hub includes a generally hollow hub body having a first end and a second end spaced apart along a hub axis of rotation, the first end defining a rotor connection flange configured to connect the rotor hub to the main shaft, the second end defining a nose region of the hub. The hub also defines at least one blade bore defined between the first end and the second end, a blade bearing associated with the or each blade bore, and a pitch actuator associated with the blade bearing. The hub body has an operating configuration in which a portion of the pitch actuator protrudes from the nose region of the hub body by a first distance and a transport configuration in which the portion of the pitch actuator protrudes from the nose region of the hub body by a smaller extent than in the operating configuration. Thus, it should be conscious that energizing the pitch actuator varies the extent to which the pitch actuator protrudes through the nose region of the hub body.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a solution or apparatus for transporting oversized rotor hubs of wind turbine generators in order to comply with transport constraints. Background technique [0002] In a typical "horizontal axis" wind turbine, a tower-mounted nacelle supports a rotor comprising a rotor hub and a plurality of blades. Each blade is connected to the rotor hub at its root end via a blade or "pitch" bearing. The pitch cylinder actuates the blade bearing to rotate or "pitch" the blade about its axis. In some cases, the pitch cylinders protrude from the body of the rotor hub. [0003] The conditions encountered at a wind turbine construction site can be challenging and the field assembly process should therefore be minimized. Therefore, the main components of the wind turbine, such as the rotor hub, are usually pre-assembled off-site and transported to the construction site, where the wind turbine is assembled as quickly as possible.
