Problems solved by technology

This can be achieved in a convenient and cost-effective manner through home monitoring, whereas even annual measurements of daily IOP change pose a high cost burden when performed in a healthcare center (e.g., clinic) rather than in a home care setting
[0004] Medications that are self-administered, especially in drops, have been shown to have poor patient compliance and ineffective drop results

Embodiment Construction

[0034] The present invention incorporates a dosing unit (drug applicator) into an tonometry unit (eg, a unit for measuring intraocular pressure or pressure in the eye). The tonometer unit may be based on any known tonometer technique, such as rebound-based tonometers, puff-based tonometers, electromagnetic-based or acoustic-based mechanical wave tonometers, optical coherent elastography (OCE ) tonometer, etc. By way of example and not limitation, the invention is described below as applied to a rebound-based tonometer and an insufflation-based tonometer. The incorporated dosing unit may be separate from the tonometer's tonometer unit / mechanism, or may incorporate components of the tonometer unit / mechanism (eg integrated into the tonometer unit). That is, the dispensing unit may utilize the tonometry mechanism to administer a predetermined dose of medication. For purposes of illustration, separate examples of a rebound-based tonometer and an insufflation-based tonometer are p...

Abstract

The proposed combination device combines any tonometric metrology with a drug application to administer glaucoma medication on an eye. Several technical concepts are proposed and exemplary embodimentsfor rebound tonometry and air-puff tonometry are shown. However other methods such as optical coherence elastography (OCE) could also be used. The Solutions provide home care tonometry offerings which host the capability to administer glaucoma medication.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to tonometers for measuring pressure within the eyeball. More specifically, the present invention relates to a combined device for providing tonometry and drug delivery to the eye. Background technique [0002] Tonometry, used to monitor the pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure), is of particular interest for patients with glaucoma. Glaucoma, or glaucoma, is a depression (ablation) of the optic nerve. This usually results in a steadily progressive damage to the optic nerve, which also results in a steady reduction of the visual field in the same patient. This often results in complete loss of vision if left untreated. Although the exact cause of glaucoma or damage to the optic nerve has not been fully elucidated, it has been established that increased intraocular pressure due to worsening drainage of the aqueous humor within the eye may be a trigger. Therefore, continuous monitoring of intraocular pr...
