Embodiment

[0163] Soybean [Glycine max(L.)Merr.] is one of the most widely planted leguminous crops in the world, and it has excellent BNF ability 35 . In this study, the soybean SM-localized Pi transporter GmPT7 was identified and found to be critically involved in Pi uptake from the rhizosphere and Pi transport from host plant cells to bacteroids. Dual inhibition of GmPT5 and GmPT7 severely inhibits soybean nodulation. In contrast, overexpression of GmPT7 improved nodule development and nitrogenase activity, and subsequently altered soybean yield in the field. These results, to the best of our knowledge, constitute the discovery that Pi transporters play a role in the direct uptake of Pi into nodules and the transport of Pi across the SM in symbionts, while also demonstrating that GmPT5 and GmPT7 jointly control the major Pi uptake and transport, and thus affect N 2 Fixed and soybean yields.

[0164] Identification of the Pi transporter gene GmPT7 expressed by nodules. As previous...

Abstract

The invention relates to a method of increasing yield in plants comprising increasing the expression of a nucleic acid encoding a phosphate transporter (PT7) polypeptide. The invention also relates tomethods of making such plants and genetically altered plants that display an increased yield.

Description

[0001] field of invention [0002] The present invention relates to a method of increasing yield in plants comprising increasing the expression of a nucleic acid encoding a phosphate transporter (PT7) polypeptide. The invention also relates to methods of making such plants and genetically altered plants exhibiting increased yield. [0003] Background of the invention [0004] Sustainably increasing crop yields with low environmental cost to feed the world's growing population is a very pressing issue. However, current yield increases are largely dependent on the widespread use of fertilizers, especially nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fertilizers 1,2 . On the other hand, legumes biofix N 2 (BNF) provide an essential nitrogen source, thereby acting as a central player in the agroecosystem 3 . in N 2 Both the huge energy cost of fixation and the rapid development of nodules require an adequate P supply for legumes 4 . It has been reported that phosphate (Pi) starvation se...
