The luminance compensation method comprises the following steps: acquiring the current refresh frequency ofa display panel; acquiring a target luminance value corresponding to the current refresh frequency according to the corresponding relationship between the refresh frequency and the luminance value; acquiring a target current value corresponding to the target luminance value according to the corresponding relationship between the luminance value and the backlight drive current value; and generatinga drive current signal of a backlight unit of the display panel according to the target current value, and driving the backlight unit to emit light according to the drive current signal. The luminance compensation method and the luminance compensation system provided by the invention have the advantages that when the refresh frequency is changed, the current refresh frequency is acquired in time,and the backlight drive current is correspondingly adjusted to eliminate the phenomena such as luminance jump and screen flashing when the refresh frequency of the display panel is adjusted, therebyensuring the watching experience.
