The CAN differential signal incoming via the CAN data bus is converted in a manner known per se using a comparator 10 into a bit sequence, sampled (block) 9 and decoded by means of a decoder 8 . The decoded CAN message is then compared with the data stored in Configuration Register 2. In the case of a match, a corresponding wake-up signal WUF is output to the associated electronic control unit. The data stored in the configuration register 2 define under which conditions or under which CAN messages arrive the transceiver 1 activates the electronic control unit assigned to it. In the case of an error detected during decoding or when the limit value of the error counter is reached, a wake-up signal F indicating this error is output to the electronic control unit.
