The method and system are applied to the process for reading and writing information for the network device by a network management system by simple network management protocol (SNMP) proxy equipment. The method comprises: when a reading request that is sent by a network management system and is used for reading information of a network device is received, SNMP proxy equipment reads the information of the network device from a preset cache server with cached information of the network device; the SNMP proxy equipment checks whether the information of the network device is consistent with the network device information cached in the cache server regularly; and if not, the cached network device information in the cache server is synchronized. According to the invention, a phenomenon that repeated information inquiring needs to be carried out on the network device for each reading operation can be avoided; the reading operation efficiency of the network device is effectively improved; and the pressure on the SNMP proxy equipment is reduced.
