Embodiment Construction

[0036] It should be noted that various connections between elements are set forth in the following description and in the drawings, the contents of which are incorporated by reference into this disclosure. It should be noted that generally, and unless otherwise specified, these connections may be direct or indirect and that this description is not intended to be limiting in this regard. In this regard, coupling between entities may refer to either a direct connection or an indirect connection.

[0037] Exemplary embodiments of devices, systems, and methods are described to facilitate additive topology optimized manufacturing (ATOM). ATOM can combine features of one or more design tools (such as topology optimization) and additive manufacturing techniques to produce integrated results that are better than either tool / technique alone. In some embodiments, in order to achieve the greatest return, the design tool can incorporate the characteristics of the additive manufacturing t...

Abstract

A computing device includes a processor, is operative on a plurality of constraints associated with a component, and integrates the constraints with a design optimization methodology across multiple variables including additive manufacturing constraints to generate a specification for the component. The component may be fabricated in accordance with the specification.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Application No. 61 / 792,734, filed March 15, 2013 and entitled "Additive Topology Optimized Manufacturing For Multi-Functional Components," the entire contents of which are incorporated by reference. Background technique [0003] Additive manufacturing (AM) has been studied over the past two decades and is currently receiving a lot of attention. Various printing techniques, such as three-dimensional or 3D printing techniques, have been used to produce components. For example, sheet welding, wire welding, melting in a powder bed or powder deposition via laser and electron beam melting, and infusion with powder have all been used. These techniques have varying degrees of geometric complexity, but generally have few constraints compared to conventional machining. The use of cold spray is also being considered in connection with additive manufacturing. Each type of technol...
