Embodiment Construction

[0181] will now refer to figure 2 , 3 , 4 and 5 describe preferred embodiments of the invention.

[0182] figure 2A graphics processor 20 operable in accordance with the present invention is shown schematically. Graphics processor 20 includes geometry processor 21 and renderer 22 , both of which have access to memory 23 . Memory 23 may be "on-chip" with geometry processor 21 and renderer 22 or may be an external memory accessible by geometry processor 21 and renderer 22 as is known in the art.

[0183] In particular, and if figure 2 As shown, the memory 23 stores a set of raw geometry data 24 (provided, for example, by a graphics processor driver or an API enabled on the host system (microprocessor) of the graphics processor 20, as is known in the art) , a set of transformed geometry data 25 (which is the result of various deformation and processing operations performed on the original geometry 24 , as is also known in the art), and a set of primitive lists 26 . The p...

Abstract

Method of and apparatus for processing graphics. A primitive listing and sorting arrangement for a tile-based graphics rendering system in which primitive lists can be prepared for at least two different sets of sub-regions of the render target area. Two or more alternative solutions for listing the primitive for rendering using the sub-regions of at least two of the at least two different sets of sub-regions of the render target area that primitive lists can be prepared for are determined (S62). A cost function is then used to assess the cost of listing the primitive for each determined alternative primitive listing solution (S63) and the primitive listing arrangement to use is then selected based on the cost assessment (S64). A preferred embodiment uses an adaptive cost function that can be modified in use based on analysis of the costs for the primitive listing process actually being experienced in use.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to methods and apparatus for processing graphics, and more particularly to methods and apparatus for use in tile-based graphics processing systems. Background technique [0002] As is known in the art, graphics processing is usually carried out by first dividing the displayed scene into many small elementary components or "primitives", which are then subjected to the required graphics processing operations. Graphics "primitives" are usually in the form of simple polygons such as triangles, and are usually described by defining their vertices. [0003] Many graphics processing systems use so-called "tile-based" rendering. In tile-based rendering, two-dimensional rendering output or objects (ie, the output of a rendering process, such as an output frame to be displayed) are rendered into many smaller area sub-regions commonly referred to as "tiles". Chunks are rendered individually (typically one after the other). The ren...
