[0021] refer to figure 1 , describing an illustrative intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) system. Intensity modulated radiation therapy is performed as fractionated radiation therapy, ie over a series of radiation therapy sessions. Before radiation therapy begins, planned images of a subject (eg, tumor patient, animal undergoing veterinary radiation therapy, etc.) are acquired. The planning images are typically transmission computed tomography (CT) images, although planning images may be obtained by another imaging modality such as magnetic resonance (MR), such as positron emission tomography (PET) or single photon emission computed tomography ( SPECT) emission mode and so on to obtain. Also, it should be understood that a planning image may require the acquisition of a volumetric (3D) image, a row of planar (2D) images that together define a volumetric image, etc., and that the planning image may use two or more different imaging modalities. As an example of the l...

Abstract

A deformation vector field (DVF) (22) is computed to relatively spatially register the first image (16) and the second image (14). A contour (26) of a structure in a first image (16) is delineated using the DVF adjustment to generate an initial contour (52) of the structure in the second image (14). A final outline of the structure in the second image is received (56). The DVF is corrected based on the initial contour and the final contour of the structure in the second image to generate a corrected DVF (32). The correcting may include calculating an adjusted DVF (62) associated with the initial profile and the final profile and combining the DVF with the adjusted DVF to generate a corrected DVF. The final outline may be received by displaying the second image overlaid with the initial outline and receiving user adjustments of the overlay outline, for each received user adjustment, updating the overlay outline.

Description

technical field [0001] The following relates to the field of medical imaging. It relates in particular to image registration of sequential images acquired in connection with the execution of fractionated radiation therapy and is described with particular reference thereto. The following more generally relates to the registration of images with previously acquired and usually segmented images. Background technique [0002] In fractionated radiation therapy, the radiation dose is spread over a series of radiation therapy sessions. Fractionation of radiation doses offers certain benefits, such as allowing patients to recover between courses, and enabling medical staff to assess the effectiveness of radiation therapy from one course to another and make adjustments, for example, to accommodate the presence of malignancies in Decrease in size over time (perhaps due to effectiveness of radiation therapy). [0003] In intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), radiation beams ...
