Abstract

The invention discloses a phototherapy method and device. A system used for curing hyperbilirubinemia comprises an optical device suitable for dividing light into a plurality of component spectral colors. The system further comprises an optical filter suitable for receiving the component spectral colors from the optical device. The optical filter is configured with a part for transmitting a component spectral color in a predefined wavelength range and the rest part for blocking component spectral colors outside the predefined wavelength range. The predefined wavelength range exclusively comprises a wavelength suitable for curing the hyperbilirubinemia.

Description

technical field [0001] The subject matter disclosed herein relates to phototherapy methods and devices for treating hyperbilirubinemia. Background technique [0002] Hyperbilirubinemia is a medical condition in which the level of bilirubin in the blood is too high. Bilirubin is a yellow breakdown product of hemoglobin. Hyperbilirubinemia causes yellowing of the skin and eyes and, if left untreated, can cause jaundice. Hyperbilirubinemia is common in infants because their livers may not be able to process bilirubin initially. [0003] A phototherapy device is used to treat newborns with hyperbilirubinemia. Light therapy devices typically have electric lights that are placed over the baby and that radiate light in the wavelength range of approximately 420 to 480 nm in order to break down the bilirubin into a form that can be excreted from the body. [0004] One problem with conventional light therapy devices is that electricity is required to generate the light. Electrici...
