Problems solved by technology

Resulting bubble embolism can cause significant patient morbidity or death
This can be prevented by placing a one-way or check valve between the needleless adapter and the IV line; however, this solution can be expensive, with appropriate check valves unavailable, and additional connections and disconnections possible source of contamination

Embodiment Construction

[0030] Referring to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in figure 1 A first exemplary embodiment of a medical valve assembly 20 for receiving fluid from a needle-free device is generally shown in . The needle-free device is hereinafter referred to as the needle-free injector 22, but it should be understood that the needle-free device may be any desired device for injecting and / or ejecting fluids.

[0031] The first exemplary medical valve assembly 20 includes a rigid outer housing 24 (generally indicated as such) extending along axis A from an open first housing end 26 to an open second housing end 28 . Preferably, housing 24 is made of a polymeric material, but it should be understood that housing 24 may be made of any rigid material. The housing 24 defines an inner housing wall 30 and an outer housing wall 32 defining threads 34 adjacent the first housing end 26 for threading with the needle-free syringe...

Abstract

A medical valve assembly includes a rigid external housing and a valve stem of a resilient material. The valve stem includes a passageway for conveying a fluid which has an hourglass shape to create a venturi effect when cleaning the valve stem to improve the efficiency of the cleaning process. The passageway also includes no sharp edges, thus reducing the risk of fluid getting trapped inside the passageway when the medical valve assembly is not in use. Even further, when a needleless syringe is removed from the valve stem, the valve stem expands to an uncompressed state with its top end being generally flush with an end of the housing to present a swabable surface for cleaning purposes.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of Provisional Application Serial No. 61 / 392,063, filed October 12, 2010 and Provisional Application Serial No. 61 / 474,925, filed April 13, 2011. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to a medical valve assembly for receiving fluid from a needle-free injector. Background technique [0004] Needle-free injectors are used in the medical field to deliver fluids to a patient without the accidental risk of the needle sticking the patient or the person treating the patient. Needle-free injectors typically include a luer for delivering fluid to a medical valve and threads for threading with the medical valve. A variety of medical valves have been developed for engaging needle-free injectors and delivering fluids to a patient's IV line. One such medical valve is shown in US Patent No. 6,651,956, issued November 25, 2003 to Pavel T. Miller (hereinafter "Miller '956"). The...
