Abstract

The invention relates to a production management method and a system for executing the method. First, the inter-organizational track and trace system facilitates the identification and handling of disruptions along the supply chain in a timely manner. However, these systems usually operate at the supply chain management (SCM) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) level, thus lacking knowledge of and control over the production process. The present invention bridges the gap between logistics and production IT by proposing a novel architecture for combining manufacturing operations defined in IEC 62264 with an EPCIS compliant real-time track and trace system. The system utilizes logic-based complex event processing to detect critical disruptions in the supply chain and initiate rescheduling of production. The results show that, in the presence of unexpected events, the rescheduling algorithm minimizes delays and inventory costs while avoiding "stressed schedules" caused by frequent changes.
