[0011] Various traditional network architectures provide flow-based or classification-based QoS mechanisms. Flow-based mechanisms include Integration Services (IntServ or IS), which employs the Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP) to make network resource reservations for each specific flow or data passing through the network.
[0012] Classification-based mechanisms include Differentiated Services (DiffServ or DS), sometimes called "provisioned QoS." Instead of reserving resources for specific flows, DiffServ divides traffic into ordered service classes
[0013] (COSe), and then treat these classes as aggregate flows on a hop-by-hop basis. The current IP implementation of DiffServ defines eight COSes. To achieve this goal, DiffServ provides a standard method of encoding the existing Type of Service (TOS) field in the header of an IP packet into DS bytes, the most significant bit being defined as DSCP. Additional information in the DS byte defines per-hop behavior.
