[0084] Total internal reflection (TIR) is an optical phenomenon that occurs when light rays strike a medium boundary from a higher to a lower refractive index medium at an angle greater than a specific critical angle with respect to the normal to the surface. When TIR occurs, no rays are able to cross the boundary, and all rays are reflected. The critical angle is the angle of incidence above which total internal reflection occurs. Figure 1 shows total internal reflection in a cube medium. If the refractive index n of the medium is greater than 1 / (sin45)=1.414, and the surrounding medium is air (refractive index 1), then even if the incident angle α is close to 90 degrees, the light will always is trapped inside the medium until it reaches the opposite surface.
