Problems solved by technology

Most current recycling programs do not provide a direct correlation between the waste products collected and the environmental impact
[0008] The sports equipment industry continues to move towards environmentally friendly practices, and the challenge for recycling programs is to motivate consumers and users to actually return used products

Embodiment Construction

[0021] figure 1 An overview of a method and system for incentivizing product collection and recycling is shown. The collected products can be of any type that can be collected and recycled. The term "recycling" is used throughout this specification to refer to a number of concepts for the reprocessing of collected products, including but not limited to: recycling products in bulk, for example for PET bottles; materials; and bulk reuse of products such as tires repurposed for sports fields. The term can also include other necessary steps such as sorting and washing the collected product. Collected products may be collected from users, such as individuals, households, organizations, or other entities; or from manufacturers who have rejects or inventories for disposal. The term "collected product" shall include all waste or surplus product that is put into the recycling stream.

Abstract

A system and method for incentivizing recycling of collected products by providing both an incentive award and information about the post-recycling stream designation of the collected products to a user. The collected products are assigned a trace element which is machine readable data input, with scanners or detectors disposed along the recycling stream. Once a decision is made regarding the recycle designation for a collected product, that information is provided to the user. A computer program that stores and calculates the award could be used to calculate analogous or ancillary calculations regarding post-recycling designations to enable comparisons with other users and online competition.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a system and method for collecting, recycling products such as golf balls and providing users with rewards for recycling and information about the use of the products to be reprocessed via a network. Background technique [0002] Increased ecological awareness has fueled a range of ideas for recycling and repurposing of all types of consumer goods. In the athletic footwear and equipment industry, many initiatives have been taken to collect and recycle waste materials generated during the manufacturing process, as well as to collect waste products used as raw materials. One well-known process is commonly known as the Nike "Grind" program, in which waste footwear is collected, broken down, and the components are ground to obtain raw materials for use in new products. For example, components of discarded footwear are ground up and reworked into surfaces such as basketball courts, running tracks, and other games. Variatio...
