Problems solved by technology

Another problem with this design, especially in very deep wells, is that it is difficult to know whether the lifting force exerted at the surface has been converted into enough lifting force at the conversion tool 26 to The chuck 42 is lifted high enough that when the weight is dropped again, it will fall into the position shown in Figure 2

Embodiment Construction

[0013] image 3 A packer body is shown comprising an upper sub 100 connected to a multi-part body 102 which in turn is connected to a plug 104 . Slips and seals for the packer are omitted. The conversion tool 106 has an arbor 108 starting at an upper sub 110 that connects to a coupler 112 . Next is the upper body 114 connected to the lower body 116 , followed by the connector 118 and plug 120 . Arrow 122 represents fluid, possibly from the surface, flowing through channel 124 and into the annulus below packer plug 104 . Those skilled in the art will appreciate that the annular outlet to the external sand filter assembly is not shown in the drawings. The figure shows return passage 126 separate from passage 124 . exist image 3 In the run-down position shown, passageway 126 is closed by seals 128 and 130 on either side of port 132 , which is aligned with passageway 126 .

Abstract

A crossover tool assembly is ran in with a packer and after the packer is set it is released from the packer for independent movement. The assembly is picked up to allow spring loaded dogs to come out so that upon setting down weight the crossover assembly has an outer assembly that is supported on the packer mandrel. The crossover mandrel can then be set down and picked up to operate a j-slot mechanism in the crossover. Relative movement induced by the j-slot with the outer assembly of the crossover supported by the dogs allows a return path within the crossover to be opened or closed independent of any contact with the packer mandrel.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to crossover tools used in conjunction with isolation packers and sand screens for various completion operations such as gravel packs and frac packs. Background technique [0002] Transition tools are used in conjunction with isolation packers to allow for gravel packs and frac packs (hydraulic fracturing with gravel packs). Some designs have run ins that have been positioned to allow fluid pumped through the tubing string to the crossover tool to flow into the annulus outside the sand filter assembly, and to return fluid through the flush pipe inside the sand screen. The return flow returns through a breakaway passage in the crossover and flows into the annulus above the packer. [0003] Another type of transition tool transitions between a squeeze position and a circulation position by moving it relative to a seal hole in the packer body. The designs shown in Figures 1 and 2 include the use of spaced indicator joints a...
