Problems solved by technology

Using matching structures in the antenna aperture or using multiple ports will create problems that do not obey the Chu limit
[0011] Third, because Chu's theory is based on an inverse relationship between Q (quality factor) and bandwidth that quickly becomes invalid as Q decreases below about 4, Chu's theory can only be used for high Q narrowband antenna
Therefore, Chu's theory is completely inapplicable for broadband (low-Q) antennas, usually of the non-resonant type
[0012] Fourth, the unrealistic zero-dissipative loss assumption makes Chu's theory unsuitable for those design methods that optimize the gain bandwidth at a small cost of dissipative loss
The actual bandwidth limitation on the upper frequency limit is mainly due to the radiation properties (pattern and polarization) of the antenna; and the actual bandwidth limitation on the lower frequency limit is due to its impedance
[0014] However, these conformal TW antennas beyond the Chu limit are limited to SMM antennas and SW antennas, both of which have conductive ground planes and radiators that are fairly flat and spaced by a constant distance

[0041] now refer to figure 1 , this figure has described the antenna 10 installed on the platform 30, and the antenna / platform assembly is collectively represented by 50, and this is due to, and especially when the size of the antenna is smaller than, for example, 1 / 2 wavelength, there is a gap between the antenna 10 and its mounting platform 30 There are inseparable interactions.

[0042] In a preferred form of the invention, the Figure 2A plan view of the , and with Figure 2B in the Figure 2A A cross-sectional view taken at the A-A' plane of , depicting a conformal broadband traveling wave (TW) antenna coupled to a platform. The broadband TW antenna 100 is conformally mounted on the platform 300 and acts as an integrated antenna / platform assembly 200 . Conformal mounting generally means that the antenna is a low-profile structure, allowing it to be integrated into the platform with minimal intrusion and / or protrusion.

Abstract

The invention is a novel solution to circumvent the fundamental gain bandwidth limitations of an antenna of a given size by using a traveling-wave (TW) antenna and strongly coupling it with the mounting platform to enlarge the effective size of the antenna. A preferred form of this invention comprises a conducting ground surface generally curvilinear and conformal to said platform, a broadband TW surface radiator positioned above and spaced apart from said ground surface, an impedance matching structure between the surface radiator and the conducting ground surface, and a reactive impedance matching network positioned on the periphery of said surface radiator.
