Abstract

A method and an apparatus for determining a location of a mobile receiver including the steps of measuring a plurality of signal strengths received by a mobile receiver, wherein the plurality of signal strengths are associated with a plurality of cellular stations, wherein the plurality of signal strengths is associated with a specific point in time, combining the plurality of signal strengths with a plurality of signal path modeling parameters to create a propagation path loss model of the path between the plurality of cellular stations and the mobile receiver, applying a non-linear estimation algorithm to the propagation path loss model, generating a plurality of distances, wherein each distance is associated with the mobile receiver and each of the plurality of cellular stations and computing the location of the mobile receiver by iterating the non-linear estimation algorithm and resulting mobile receiver position until converged.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to mobile cellular receivers, and more particularly to a method and system for calculating the geographic location of a mobile receiver using at least one network test report. Background technique [0002] For wireless long-distance communication networks (that is, communication networks including at least one wireless interface between communication devices), various types of location-based service applications (location-based service applications) have been developed or proposed in the industry. In general, such applications can determine or obtain positioning information related to the location of a mobile receiver of interest, such as a wireless phone, PDA, wireless data terminal etc. Location service applications include E911, local service information and location-based billing applications. In E911 applications, emergency calls are forwarded to a dispatcher selected based on the location of the source of the emerg...
