Embodiment

[0037] What is claimed is: 1. A method of distributing beacon information in a wireless communication system comprising a plurality of Wireless Transmit / Receive Units (WTRUs).

[0038] 2. The method of embodiment 1 further comprising the first WTRU modifying a Physical Layer Convergence Protocol (PLCP) header in a Physical Protocol Data Unit (PHY PDU) frame to include beacon information.

[0039] 3. The method as in any preceding embodiment, further comprising the first WTRU sending the modified PLCP header to the second WTRU.

[0040] 4. The method as in any preceding embodiment, further comprising the second WTRU receiving the modified PLCP header.

[0041] 5. The method as in any preceding embodiment, further comprising the second WTRU extracting beacon information from the received modified PLCP header.

[0042] 6. The method as in any preceding embodiment, further comprising associating the second WTRU with the first WTRU.

[0043] 7. The method as in any one of the pre...

Abstract

A method and apparatus for distributing beacon information includes a first WTRU modifying a physical layer convergence protocol (PLCP) header in a physical protocol data unit (PHY PDU) frame to include beacon information. The first WTRU transmits the modified PLCP header to a second WTRU. The second WTRU receives the modified PLCP header and extracts beacon information from the modified PLCP header. The second WTRU associates with the first WTRU.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to wireless communication systems, such as wireless local area networks (WLANs). More particularly, the present invention relates to a method and apparatus for distributing beacon information in a wireless communication system. Background technique [0002] In an 802.11 system, a station (STA) associates with an access point (AP) through active or passive scanning. In active scanning, the STA sends a probe request and the AP responds with a probe response. In passive scanning, STAs actively listen to beacons. Both probe response packets and beacons contain similar information such as: time stamp, beacon interval, SSID, supported data rates, FH parameters, CF parameters, DS parameter set and capacity information set. In either case, the STA associates with the AP upon receipt of a beacon or probe response. [0003] Typically, a mobile STA connects to a new AP by obtaining beacon information and associating with the beac...
