Embodiment 1

[0082] Embodiment 1. Adopt saturation method to carry out surface treatment to substrate

[0083] For descriptive purposes, typically, a 500 ml aqueous formulation was prepared containing 0.5 wt% PHMB + 3 wt% citric acid + 0.3 wt% Glucopon 220UP + 96.8 wt% water, as shown in Table 3. The relative concentrations of the examples in Table 3 are all normalized to 100% solids for each ingredient. For example, 0.5 wt% in Example 1 means that 2.5g of Cosmocil CQ (which is 20% solids PHMB) was actually used in 100 solution to achieve an actual 0.5 wt% PHMB in the final composition.

[0084] The aqueous formulation was mixed with careful stirring for about 20 minutes using a laboratory blender (Stirrer RZR 50 from Caframo Ltd., Wiarton, Ontario, Canada). Alternatively, a high shear mixer can also be used. After the aqueous composition (or solution) has been mixed and homogenized, it is introduced into a Teflon or glass coated dish. An 8" x 11" hand-held sheet was then dipped into th...

Embodiment 2

[0092] Embodiment 2. Adopt the surface treatment of overlapping layer coating method

[0093] a. Reverse roll coating:

[0094] In reverse roll coating, the coating composition is measured on the applicator roll by precisely setting the gap between the upper dose roll and the applicator roll below it. The coating was brushed off the applicator as the substrate passed the support roll at the bottom. The views in Figures 3A-C depict a 3-roll reverse roll coating process, although 4-rolls are also common. In reverse gravure coating, the actual coating material is metered by a die on the roll prior to wiping off, as in traditional reverse roll coating.

[0095] b. Gravure coating

[0096] The gravure coating relies on an engraved roll running in a coating solution, the roll's printed dots or lines being filled with the coating material. Excess coating, which builds up on the substrate as it passes through the engraved and pressure rolls, is removed from the roll by a surgical ...

Abstract

The present invention describes an antimicrobial composition that involves a synergistic mixture in terms of active agents, of a primary antimicrobial agent, such as polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB), a secondary antimicrobial agent, and optionally an organic acid against various kinds of microbes is described. Various additional processing aids, such as alcohols and surfactants, may also be incorporated within the mixture. The composition allows one to use a significantly less concentration of individual constituent antimicrobial agents to achieve the same or a better degree of antimicrobial efficacy. The antimicrobial composition can be applied to the surface of almost any kind of substrate material, and can achieve a killing-efficacy of about 3 Log10 reduction in microbes within 30 minutes under ambient conditions.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to chemical treatments that can be applied to protective articles. In particular, the present invention relates to compositions of materials useful in controlling the spread of pathogens and infectious diseases. Background technique [0002] In recent years, the prevalence of nosocomial infection has constituted a serious hidden danger to patients and medical workers. Nosocomial infection is an infection that is caused or occurs in a hospital or long-term care facility similar to a hospital. In general, nosocomial infections are more serious and dangerous than infections in the outside community because pathogens in hospitals are more deadly and more resistant to common antibiotics. Nosocomial infections cause approximately 20,000 to 100,000 deaths each year in the United States. About 5% to 10% of American hospital patients (approximately 2 million per year) are infected with clinically apparent nosocomial infections. ...
