[0048] Throughout the figures, the same reference numerals are used for corresponding or analogous elements.

[0049] The present invention relates to the management of multimedia sessions in communication systems, and more particularly to establishing such multimedia sessions and managing the switching of multimedia sources during ongoing sessions.

[0050] The present invention provides for obtaining a TV-like experience in a unicast based communication system similar to the current normal TV system and the upcoming multicast / broadcast based mobile TV. The teachings of the present invention can be applied to any such unicast system, especially wireless communication systems that use the Internet Protocol (IP) for data communication. A typical example of such a system is a Packet Switched (PS) system that provides multimedia data to connected users via PS Streams (PSS).

[0051] Thus, the present invention allows a user to join a multimedia session that in a unicast based co...

Abstract

A multimedia provider (100) generates, based on a request for a media channel from a user terminal (10), a session set-up description that is returned to the user terminal (10). The description defines, when processed in the terminal (10), a session window (20) that is displayed on a screen (12) of the terminal and comprises a region (22) for displaying media data of a requested channel and a channel region (24) comprising information on alternative available media channels. The description also defines a binding between user inputs (14) of the terminal (10) and identifiers of the alternativechannels. The set-up description allows for a user-friendly channel switch by automatically transmitting a channel switch request to the multimedia provider (100) upon a triggering of the user input (14) that is associated with the identifier of the requested media channel. The description, thus, provides a visually appealing graphical interface and simultaneously allows for a user-friendly mediachannel switch.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to multimedia session management in communication systems, and more particularly to session management allowing smooth user-friendly transitions of multimedia channels. Background technique [0002] It has become a trend to provide a wide range of new services in existing mobile networks and mobile communication systems. Currently, there is great interest in mobile networks using multimedia or television (TV) content. This is often technically referred to as "Mobile-TV". The goal of mobile TV is to provide a TV-like experience, where the user can select and easily switch quickly between different multimedia or TV channels. [0003] Common television channels are broadcast to many users, and users can usually choose which channel to receive or watch. Mobile TV is like delivering a set of (real-time) media or multimedia streams to some end users. Each multimedia stream corresponds to a television channel, and ...
