Problems solved by technology

This solution to the growl problem is costly and adds significant weight to the rear panel subassembly
Additionally, the inherent variability in spraying heavy-adhesive materials onto sheet-metal parts when applying heavy-adhesive materials to sheet metal parts has resulted in a lack of consistency in the effectiveness of this method in addressing the growl issue

Embodiment Construction

[0026] Referring to Figures 1-3, a rear panel subassembly embodying the principles of the present invention for a passenger compartment of a motor vehicle, such as a pickup truck, can be best seen. Those skilled in the art will readily recognize that the rear panel subassembly 10 is typically used as a rear structural component, positioned under the rear window glass of a pickup truck cab, as described by Steve Bruford. Bruford et al., US Patent Application No. 10 / 975,065, which is incorporated herein by reference. In some pick-up trucks or sports utility vehicles structured like a pick-up truck, the rear window 11 is fixed, or is arranged to slide sideways to selectively form a central opening in the rear window. In some rear panel subassemblies 10, as shown in FIG. In order to enable the rear window glass 11 to retract into the inner cavity 15, the middle part of the inner cavity 15 corresponding to the position of the rear window glass 11 must remain unobstructed.

Abstract

A structural sound baffle is incorporated into a sheet metal subassembly used in the production of an automotive vehicle, such as a pick-up truck. The structural sound baffle is formed in a Z-shaped configuration that has a first flange welded to the inner panel of the internal cavity, while the second flange is affixed by a heat cured adhesive to the outer panel of the assembly. The baffle joins the two panels to create a more rigid structure than the subassembly without the structural sound baffle affixed thereto. The more rigid structure is less sensitive to boom vibrations, reducing acoustic boom by 64%. In pick-up truck back panel applications, where a retractable window is receivable within the internal cavity of the subassembly, the baffle can be utilized without interfering with the package constraints associated with the retractable back glass configuration.

Description

technical field [0001] FIELD OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to automotive sheet metal assemblies having internal cavities between separated panels, and more particularly to a structural acoustic baffle for reducing booming sounds emitted by hollow sheet metal assemblies. Background technique [0002] Motor vehicles utilize formed sheet metal subassemblies in the manufacture of vehicles. This sheet metal subassembly consists of longitudinally spaced panels forming an internal cavity therebetween. One such metal panel subassembly is the rear panel subassembly that forms the rear wall of the pickup truck cab. In some cases, the inherent structural resonances of the metal panels that form the longitudinal boundaries of the sheet metal subassembly can be excited by vibrational inputs from road surface changes and vehicle powertrain operation, producing a booming sound reminiscent of the beating of a bass drum. [0003] Once the sheet metal subassembly has been designed...
