Problems solved by technology

However, this system is only a pure authenticity judgment based on whether the banknote contains ultraviolet fibers or not.
If the UV-embedded banknotes are being stolen in bulk, or if counterfeiters are making banknotes from their own UV-embedded paper, existing systems will not be able to detect it

Embodiment Construction

[0053] In a first embodiment of the invention, in an article in the form of a banknote 10 as shown in FIG. 1 . An identification element in the form of viscose 20 (trade name: Rayon) is embedded in this banknote. The viscose fiber 20 has been dyed with a fluorescent dye, so it emits visible light when subjected to external ultraviolet (UV, ultraviolet) radiation (hereinafter, the viscose fiber 20 is referred to as UV fiber). The fluorescent dye makes the UV fibers 20 visible against the cellulose background of the paper.

[0054] The directions of the UV fibers in the banknote 20 are randomly arranged.

[0055] It should be noted that the UV fibers 20 are not necessarily visible to the naked eye, they are shown in Figure 1 for illustrative purposes only. The UV fibers in this figure are not drawn to scale. The preferred UV fiber size is about 4-8 mm in length (6 mm is the best), but the UV fiber can have a larger selection range in length and diameter.

Abstract

A method for verifying the authenticity of an object, e.g. a bank note or a cheque, is described. The object is provided with a primary identifier in the form of a plurality of identification elements embedded in the object. The identification elements are visually detectable when illuminated by infrared or ultraviolet electromagnetic radiation but are visually indistinguishable from the rest of the object when illuminated with visible light. The object has a reference point in the form of a printed symbol defining an area of the object in which at least some of the identification elements are provided. The method includes the step of identifying a sub-area of the object defined by the reference point, and recording information relating to the positions of the identification elements in the sub-area relative to the reference point. A detector that can be used to carry out this method is also described.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a method and device for checking the authenticity of articles. The article has a plurality of randomly distributed identification elements fixed on the article or embedded in the article. The article also has a reference point defining an area of the article in which at least part of the identification element is provided. The invention relates particularly, but not exclusively, to fluorescent recognition elements. Background technique [0002] Currently, in order to prevent counterfeiting of items such as credit cards, a security device, eg a security hologram, is attached to the document. Since holograms are very difficult to reproduce, the document is also less susceptible to counterfeiting. However, such holograms are quite expensive to manufacture, and the same hologram is used for many cards, so such holograms cannot distinguish a particular card. Also, while it is possible to attach a security hologram to a relativ...
