Abstract

The present invention is the use of decumbent corydalis total alkaloid extract as the medicine for preventing and treating vascular dementia (VD). Decumbent corydalis total alkaloid extract is used in rat and mouse VD models. It is found through the ethologic comparison that decumbent corydalis total alkaloid extract can raise the learning and memory capacity of VD model rat and mouse. It is also found through the determination on VD model rat in pallium AChE, SOD activity, ACh and MDA content that the said mechanism is related to lowering the pallium AChE activity, raising ACh content, improving choline nerve function, raising pallium SOD activity and reducing the peroxide damage of pallium nervus vascullaris. Therefore, decumbent corydalis total alkaloid extract may be used in preventing and treating VD.
