Embodiment Construction

[0038] The present invention, in its preferred embodiment, is an image projection system and associated method using at least two image projectors, an image generation system for controlling the image projectors, and a retro-reflective screen to Displays multiple perspectives of an image to create a three-dimensional visual experience.

[0039] figure 2 A three-dimensional image projection according to an embodiment of the present invention is schematically represented. like figure 2 As shown, at least two projectors 20L and 20R are used to convert the calculated image L P and image R P respectively projected onto the retro-reflective screen 22, so that the appropriate retro-reflective image L r and R r presented to the left and right eyes of a viewer, thereby presenting a three-dimensional or stereoscopic image to the viewer, wherein the calculated image L P and image R P from respective transmissive LCDs or other similar pixel-based display devices.

Abstract

Disclosed herein are three-dimensional projection systems and related methods employing two electronically controlled projectors and a retro-reflective screen. When an image is projected onto a retroreflective screen, the screen produces a known non-linear light reflection pattern. Planar image information is calculated for each projector using image computing means based on the input stereopair images and information about the projectors and the screen. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the projection system uses an image calculation device that uses a neural network feedback algorithm to calculate the appropriate planar image to be projected onto the screen by multiple projectors at any given moment informative and appropriate images. More than two projectors may be employed to generate multiple perspective views, to support multiple viewers, and the like. In another embodiment, the projection system includes a digital camera that provides feedback data on the output image.

Description

[0001] References to related applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of the filing dates of US Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 60 / 345245, filed January 4, 2002, and US Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 60 / 346386, filed January 7, 2002. field of invention [0003] The invention relates to the projection of three-dimensional images. In particular, the invention relates to apparatus and related methods for three-dimensional image projection using stereo aspect images projected onto a retro-reflective screen. technical background [0004] Projection display devices use images focused on a diffuser screen to present images to a user. Projection can be from the same side of the diffuser screen as the user, as in the case of cinema projectors, or from the other side. In the prior art, a retro-reflective screen type projection system used, for example, in a movie theater, as attached figure 1 As shown, a single image is projected on the screen ...
