Problems solved by technology

Metal mesh is cheap and widely used, but it is heavy and difficult to install
But even when reinforced with fabric or mesh, known protective systems are not very effective against jet flames, thus requiring thick and heavy coatings to provide protection, even if limited

Embodiment 1

[0035] Prepare an upper layer composition for ablation, which contains 35%-65wt% of flexible polymer resin (modified epoxy resin, especially epoxy polysulfide resin can be exemplified), 5%-30% of synthetic Air agent (such as polyol foaming agent, amine blowing agent and phosphate acid generator) and about 10% to about 40% refractory filler. An exemplary composition is a two-part modified epoxy resin having the nominal formula as described below:

[0037] Wt%

[0038] Melamine 5

[0039] Ammonium polyphosphate 10

[0040] Pentaerythritol 5

[0042] Polysulfide and Amine Curing Agents 25

[0043] Fiberglass (chopped) 5

[0044] Ceramic particles 25

Embodiment 2

[0046] Prepare the lower layer active thermal protection composition, it contains 30%-70wt% polymer resin (exemplary modified epoxy resin, especially epoxy polysulfide resin) and 20-50wt% air forming agent (exemplary polyol foaming agents, amine blowing agents and phosphate acid generators). The compositions used in the tests described below are two-component epoxy-based heat-activated coatings that, when exposed to fire or thermal extremes, volatilize at a fixed temperature to exhibit a small amount of volume through the formation of an open-celled substrate Increases (greater than 2 times the starting volume), and absorbs and blocks heat to protect the substrate. Composition comprising polyol, 1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triamine, epoxy resin and polymer of bis(ethyleneoxy)methane, containing disulfide bonds and curable terminal Thiol groups (polysulfides).

Embodiment 3

[0060] Test articles prepared according to Example 2 were exposed to jet flames according to the test procedure outlined in OTI 95634, 1996. The test showed that the composite structure provided about 60 minutes of protection under the test conditions.

[0061] Smaller scale tests have shown that the protection provided by the composite system is much greater than that provided by individual upper or lower layers of thickness equal to the total thickness of the composite. The following summarizes those test results:

Abstract

A composite system for protecting a substrate from jet flames comprising a lower layer of active fire protection and an upper layer of fire protection. The upper layer forms an open cell matrix when exposed to jet flames, allowing gas to pass through the lower layer to the environment. The upper layer includes a filler of refractory material and protects the system during initial exposure to high temperature conditions. The upper layer expands when exposed to high temperature conditions, but less than the lower layer.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates to thermal protective coatings. It is used especially as a coating on substrates to protect them from extremely high-intensity, high-velocity overheating conditions. Background technique [0002] Various compositions that provide protection against fire and other high heat are known. More recently, such compositions typically include polymeric binders and char when exposed to flame or high temperature conditions. There are various methods of charring the composition. Several charred refractory coatings are disclosed in US Patent No. 5,591,791 to Deogon. In short, such coatings are ablative coatings that, when exposed to fire or other high heat, swell to less than 2 times their original thickness; intumescent coatings such as Nielsen et al. 268077 to Kaplan, 3284216 to Kaplan, or 45294679 to Ward et al., such coating swelling produces a charred layer 5 times greater than the initial thickness of the coating; and as disclosed i...
