Problems solved by technology

Although Skaja's hemispherical recesses and inserts can change some of the cushioning characteristics through layout, size and material changes, it still cannot control the compression or flattening in the desired direction or bias the compression or flattening under load

Embodiment Construction

[0029] The invention will now be described with reference to the heel bladder (or bladder) 10 shown in FIGS. 1-3B , the insert 12 shown in FIGS. 1 and 4A-8 , and the shoe 80 shown in FIG. 9 . Referring to Figures 1-3, the airbag 10 is a resilient member comprising an upper surface 13 and a lower surface 15 spaced apart from each other. The upper and lower surfaces 13 and 15 are curved towards each other along their peripheries and joined together to form the side surface 17 of the airbag 10 . The airbag 10 is preferably blow molded in a conventional manner. The airbag 10 is preferably made of a resilient thermoplastic synthetic rubber barrier film such as polyester polyurethane, polyether polyurethane, for example cast or an extruded ester polyurethane film with a Shore hardness of 80-95, for example Made of Tetra Plasticl TPW-250. Other suitable materials may also be used, such as those disclosed in the Rudy patent '156. Among the many thermoplastic urethanes that are part...

Abstract

A shoe (80) has a fluid-filled bladder (10). The airbag includes a recess (14a, 14b) and a cooperating insert (12) on the top and bottom surfaces. The concavities facing inward surround and connect with each other and have an oval shape. The dimple structure provides a lateral stabilizing force and an increased shear compliance by providing an increased contact area at the connection point. The contact area preferably corresponds to the shape of the recess. Each recess receives a correspondingly shaped insert. Inserts are designed to collapse with compressive loads and then return to shape. The shape of each insert and recess facilitates crushing. The two ends of the oval have different stiffnesses so that one end collapses before the other in response to small compressive loads.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates to footwear, and more particularly to sole cushioning. The cushioning member is specifically a fluid-filled member having a plurality of bearings configured to compress differentially in response to compressive loads and to provide improved shear compliance. Background technique [0002] Cushioners employ fluid-filled bladders such as those used in shoe soles, and much work has been done to improve the construction of cushioners. Although recent advances in materials and fabrication methods have greatly improved the versatility of fluid-filled bladders, problems remain in achieving optimum cushioning performance and increased durability. [0003] One of the advantages of inflatable bladders is that the effective energy of the gas as a cushioning substance is generally greater than that of the open cell foam commonly used in athletic shoe soles. A typical open cell foam used in midsoles is ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) foam. In ...
