[0015] Without being bound by any particular theory, we have found that reduced glutathione protects cells from oxidative stress by oxidizing itself. Therefore, L-glutathione must function in combination with other enzyme systems in order to be reduced and resume its role as a free radical scavenger. GSH also cooperates with glutathione peroxidase, which needs selenium as a cofactor, to exert its function as a biological antioxidant. Selenium compounds are known to be able to scavenge oxygen-centered free radicals in the body together with reduced glutathione through the action of glutathione peroxidase. Selenium-GSH peroxidase is believed to catalyze toxic hydroperoxidase in the presence of reduced glutathione. This reaction reduces glutathione to generate oxidized glutathione GSSG. GSSG is then reduced to GSH by glutathione reductase, thereby maintaining sufficient cellular GSH to rescavenge free radicals.
