Embodiment Construction

[0034] Current examples of footwear are in Figure 1-3 is illustrated in and generally denoted by 10 . In this embodiment, the footwear includes a sole assembly 20 that includes a midsole 30 and a plurality of individual and spaced-apart projections 40 that are spread across the lower surface of the midsole, wherein each projection Separate and dynamically articulated from the midsole at various locations. Although the present embodiment is described in the context of a hiking or performance shoe, its sole assembly may be incorporated into any type or style of footwear, including running shoes, trail shoes and boots, work boots, all-terrain shoes, sneakers, Athletic shoes, traditional tennis shoes, walking shoes, multi-sport footwear, casual shoes, dress shoes, or any other type of footwear or footwear components. Abstract

The invention relates to footwear with traction protrusions coupled to a midsole. A footwear construction includes a sole assembly having a midsole of a first hardness and a plurality of separate individually reactive protrusions of a second, greater hardness bonded to the midsole. In soft terrain, each projection may remain extended and engage the terrain to provide grip and traction. On hard terrains, each projection may be independently compressed into a deformed region of the midsole to enhance traction, so that the midsole may also optionally contact the terrains with a portion of the projections. The sole assembly may include a fabric embedded and encapsulated in the material of the protrusions and the midsole to mechanically bond the protrusions to the midsole and attenuate delamination. Each projection may include a cap extending into the midsole with the void filled with midsole material to improve projection fixation. Related methods of manufacture are also provided.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to footwear, and more particularly, to footwear including a sole assembly having a plurality of traction lugs independently bonded to a midsole (or midsole) for Provides dynamic traction on soft and hard underfoot terrain. Background technique [0002] A variety of different sole components are used in footwear. Many sole assemblies include a midsole constructed of foam and an underlying outsole typically constructed of a single sheet of rubber for durability and ease of assembly. Foam provides underfoot cushioning, and the outsole provides traction. Many times, the outsole sheet includes a plurality of protrusions integrally formed with the sheet at various locations for traction and abrasion resistance. The outsole rubber sheet and the integral plurality of lugs are generally formed from a single continuous material. The sheet spans between each protrusion such that the midsole is covered by the sheet. This protects...
