Abstract

An apparatus (108) for purifying an impure hydrogen fuel is described herein. The apparatus (108) includes a first chamber (120) and a second chamber (122). The first chamber (120) is configured to receive an impure hydrogen fuel in the form of a first gas mixture having carbon monoxide and hydrogen at a first concentration, and the second chamber (122) is configured to receive a second gas mixture having hydrogen at a second concentration. The device (108) also includes a solid electrolyte (124). The solid electrolyte (124) separates the first chamber (120) and the second chamber (122) and includes an adsorption catalyst (124). The device (108) further comprises a pair of electrodes (126-1, 126-2). And a pair of electrodes (126-1, 126-2) mounted in the first chamber (120) and the second chamber (122), respectively, to form a potential difference across the solid electrolyte (124).

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to systems and methods for removing carbon monoxide (CO) from fuel used in fuel cells. Background technique [0002] A fuel cell is an electrochemical device that generates electricity using hydrogen from a source and oxygen from the air. A fuel cell includes an anode that includes a catalyst that ionizes hydrogen gas resulting in the generation of free electrons. Similarly, the cathode of a fuel cell develops a negative potential to drive electrons from the anode to the cathode via electrical wiring. Conventional fuel cells use a platinum catalyst-based anode to ionize hydrogen gas. [0003] Fuel gases such as synthesis gas or syngas are often used as a source of hydrogen. However, the synthetic gas includes carbon monoxide, which binds to the catalyst on the anode, resulting in a phenomenon known as carbon monoxide pollution. Contamination degrades the performance of the catalyst, and thus the performance of the fue...
