Embodiment Construction

[0037] For purposes of illustration, the present invention relates to systems and methods for safely providing retinal phototherapy by determining the concentration of melanin within the eye, particularly within the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and choroid of the eye. Determining the RPE of the eye and the concentration or level of melanin in the choroid may be important in determining the health of the eye. For example, melanin acts as an antioxidant to help prevent retinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration. Determining the RPE of the eye and the concentration of melanin in the choroid may also be important in determining the treatment of ocular diseases. For example, if an individual has abnormally high concentrations or levels of melanin within the RPE, this may be useful in treating the eye (especially retina) causing unintended uplift heating and consequent tissue destruction.

[0038] The melanin layer within the choroid can vary widely. However, i...

Abstract

A system and process for safely providing retinal phototherapy includes generating first and second light beams of a different wavelength. The first and second light beams are applied to a retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) (24) and choroid (26) of an eye (10). The amount of light reflected from the eye from the first light beam and the second light beam is measured, such as using a reflectometer (110). A level or concentration of the melanin within the eye is calculated using the measured amount of light reflected from the eye from the first and second light beams. When the content or density of melanin in the RPE exceeds a predetermined amount, one or more treatment parameters of the retinal phototherapy is adjusted.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to systems and methods for safely providing retinal phototherapy. More specifically, the present invention relates to the safe delivery of retinal phototherapy by modulating the therapeutic parameters of retinal phototherapy based on, for example, retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) melanin levels determined using simple reflectance methods. Background technique [0002] The importance of macular pigment to eye health has spurred the development and interest in methods for measuring its density or concentration in the retina. However, previous systems and methods were either based on infrequently used equipment, were time consuming, or were complex and expensive. [0003] now refer to figure 1 , which shows a schematic view of the eye (generally indicated by reference numeral 10). Eye 10 includes cornea 12, the transparent front of the eye, covering the iris and pupil 14, a variable-sized black circular or slit-l...
