Problems solved by technology

This method has several limitations: (1) Color detection is performed on the cuff connector remote from the instrument
However, RFID cuff identification has limitations: (1) RFID tags are prone to malfunction when exposed to the radiation commonly used to sterilize tourniquet cuff components; (2) when more than one cuff with different RFID tags When in close proximity to an RFID reader, false identifications can occur; (3) RFID readers and RFID tags can add significantly to the cost of the instrument and / or tourniquet cuff
[0020]Other cuff identification devices and methods described or suggested in the prior art may have a high risk of failure, be unreliable, add substantial cost to the number of cuffs that can be identified Limited and / or legacy issues

Embodiment Construction

[0031] Embodiments of a tourniquet system are described below that can acquire personalization parameters for secure tourniquet personalization, such as only if the personalization parameters are intended for that tourniquet instrument. Such a system may include an optical tourniquet interface that can contactlessly read a machine-readable instrument symbol identifying one type of tourniquet instrument from among multiple types of tourniquet instruments, and denoting the tourniquet Machine-readable personalization data for one or more values of a personalization parameter on the cuff wrap or remote device. Such a system can present the value of a personalized parameter in a user-perceivable form if the machine-readable instrument symbol matches the stored authentication data. Such a system may include a secure transmission key or other control element that can be operated by the user to manually accept and transmit the value of the individualized parameter to the pressure co...

Abstract

A personalized tourniquet cuff assembly comprises a sterile tourniquet cuff, a machine readable instrument symbol, machine-readable personalization data and a sterile connector. The instrument symbol identifies a predetermined first type of tourniquet instrument from a plurality of types of tourniquet instruments and is adapted for contactless reading by an optical tourniquet interface of the first type of tourniquet instrument. The personalization data represents a value of a personalization parameter for safe operation of the tourniquet cuff with the first type of tourniquet instrument and is adapted for contactless reading by the optical tourniquet interface. The connector is adapted for releasably connecting the tourniquet cuff to the first type of tourniquet instrument. The instrument symbol and the personalization data are carried at a location enabling contactless reading thereof only if the assembly is positioned within a predetermined range of distances and range of orientations relative to the optical tourniquet interface.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application is a continuation of U.S. Patent Application No. 16 / 803,939, filed February 27, 2020, which claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62 / 931,102, filed November 5, 2019, both of which are incorporated by reference are incorporated herein in their entirety. Background technique [0003] Surgical tourniquet systems are commonly used to block arterial blood flow to a portion of a patient's extremity, resulting in a clean, dry surgical field that facilitates surgical procedures and improves outcomes. A typical prior art surgical tourniquet system includes: a tourniquet cuff for encircling a patient's limb in a desired location; a tourniquet instrument; and flexible tubing that connects the cuff to the instrument. In some prior art surgical tourniquet systems, the tourniquet cuff includes an inflatable bladder that is pneumatically connected to the tourniquet instrument via flexible tubin...
