[0115] Example 1 - Extraction of ALA rapeseed oil from seeds
[0116] Various canola species disclosed in U.S. Patent Publication No. US 2018 / 0016590A1 are grown as summer crops. Seeds were harvested and then stored at room temperature prior to extrusion.
[0117] 272 kg of seeds were pressed using a Kern Kraft KK80 screw press to produce ALA oil. Set the press collar heater temperature to the maximum setting on the thermostat. The initial ambient temperature and choke temperature are 20°C, and the choke distance is set to 73.92mm. The seeds are fed while the oil and meal are collected continuously without stopping the oil press until all the seeds are squeezed.
[0118] The rotational speed of the auger, the temperature of the flour and the discharged oil are monitored throughout the pressing process. The extrusion time for 270 kg is 4 hours, which gives an output rate of 67.5 kg / hour. A yield of 87.2 kg (32%) of crude oil was obtained. After filtration to remove fine...

[0119] Example 2 - Reference Oil Blend
[0120] Pure fish oil contains low levels of ALA fatty acids and significantly higher levels of EPA and DHA. The reference oil blend (referred to herein as "crude triglyceride reference blend oil" or similar) was designed to be as similar in composition as possible to the filtered ALA rapeseed oil obtained in Example 1 . This was done by (a) matching the total content of DHA to the total content of DHA in rapeseed oil and (b) matching the ratio of DHA / (ALA+EPA). This was achieved by blending DHA enriched fish oil (tuna), ALA enriched oil (linseed oil) and standard canola oil. The resulting reference blend also had a similar total omega-3 content to ALA canola oil.

[0121] Example 3 - Fatty acid composition of crude ALA rapeseed oil and reference blend
[0122] The filtered crude oil and reference blend oils were analyzed for fatty acid composition. The result is shown below.

[0125] Example 4 - Oil Stability Evaluation
[0126] Rancimat stability studies were performed using crude ALA rapeseed oil and the reference blend described in Examples 1 and 2, respectively. The method involves testing approximately 2.5 g of test material using a Metrohm 743 Rancimat at 90°C using the standard procedure.
[0127] The table below summarizes the results obtained with these oils at 90°C. Experiments were performed in duplicate.
[0128]
[0129] ALA rapeseed oil exhibited consistently worse stability than the reference oil.
