Embodiment Construction

[0021] Embodiments disclosed herein provide an ETT guard with or without an ETT retainer as part of a complete system, allowing access and pulling of the ETT guard without moving the ETT enclosed therein, and the implementation Solutions may include sensors that alert when the device is pulled. Those of ordinary skill will note that although the embodiments herein are described primarily with reference to the ETT, the embodiments and teachings herein are equally applicable to other oral or nasal patient access tubes.

[0022] like figure 2 As shown, embodiments of an ETT shield as disclosed herein may include a shield tube 50 formed as an elongated tubular structure configured and dimensioned to protect the body without contacting the ETT. The case fits on the ETT. At the proximal end of the tube 50, a flexible portion 52 is provided. The proximal end of tube 50 above flexible portion 52 is configured for attachment to an ETT retainer system, such as tube retainer mouthpie...

Abstract

Disclosed embodiments of an endotracheal tube (ETT) guard system help to hinder self-extubation of the ETT of an awake patient who may reflexively attempt removal, but also allow early mobilization and exercise necessary for preservation of muscle strength. Embodiments may include an ETT holder, which may be generic ETT holders offered by various medical device companies, or a specially configuredETT holder as described herein. Embodiments also may include a sensor that alarms when the ETT guard is moved beyond pre- set motion thresholds.

Description

[0001] field of invention [0002] The present invention relates generally to the field of medical protection systems and protective restraints. In particular, the present invention relates to endotracheal tube shielding devices and related retention systems and sensors. [0003] technical background [0004] Although ETT (endotracheal tube) holders are designed to secure the ETT to the head of an intubated patient, self-extubation (removal of the ETT) is still possible, common and can have dire consequences. Patients intubated with ETT are often wrist restrained and sedated to prevent self-extubation, and thus become incapable of participating in key factors such as early mobilization in voluntary ambulatory activities for reduced morbidity and mortality, and sedation Minimized to reduce hallucinations and cognitive decline, both of which have been shown to improve quality of life after intubation and prevent PICS (Post-Intensive Care Unit Syndrome), known as PTSD (Post Traum...
