Problems solved by technology

[0004] However, in use, it can be difficult to ensure that this drive portion of the adjustment mechanism is properly aligned within the disc brake during installation, and to ensure that the drive portion remains in this proper alignment during use.
Misalignment may result in impaired function of the regulator mechanism
[0005] Also, deregulation of the brake may occur, for example due to torques caused by vibrations acting on the regulator mechanism, causing the piston to extend or retract
This is undesirable as it can lead to impaired brake function due to too large or too small a pad-to-rotor air gap

Embodiment Construction

[0071] figure 1 , figure 2 and image 3 A disc brake 2 according to the invention is shown. Disc brakes incorporate an actuating mechanism comprising a single piston suitable for commercial vehicles. This type of brake is particularly, but not exclusively, suited for use with lighter-loaded heavy vehicles, such as smaller trucks or trailers in tractor-trailer combinations.

[0072] Various orientations of disc brakes are described. In particular, the inboard and outboard directions refer to the typical orientation of a disc brake when assembled to a vehicle. In this orientation, the brake pad closest to the center of the vehicle is the pad that is directly actuated by the actuation mechanism and is the inner pad, while the outer pad is the pad that mounts to the bridge portion of the caliper. The inner side can thus be equated with the actuating side of the disc brake, while the outer side can be equated with the reaction side. The terms radial, circumferential, tangent...

Abstract

An actuation mechanism for a disc brake is provied. The actuation mechanism comprises:a non-rotatable yoke to transmit an actuating force from an operating shaft;a piston configured to be driven by the yoke to transmit the actuating force to a brake pad, the piston comprising a portion rotatable with respect to the yoke to cause the piston to extend; anda wear adjustment mechanism for adjusting extension of the piston to account for wear of the brake pad, the wear adjustment mechanism including a driving portion configured to be driven by the operating shaft, to transfer torque from the operating shaft to the rotatable portion of the piston to cause the rotatable portion to rotate and extend the piston, wherein a rolling element bearing is located between the driving portion of the adjustment mechanism and the yoke.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a disc brake. More particularly, but not exclusively, the present invention relates to an actuation mechanism for an air-actuated disc brake, and a method of assembling a disc brake including said actuation mechanism. Background technique [0002] In many air disc brakes used on heavy vehicles such as trucks and buses, in order to actuate the brake and move the brake pads closer to the rotor, a yoke, a part that moves axially to Actuation transmits force from the brake's operating shaft to the piston. [0003] Many of these brakes also include an adjustment mechanism to set the position of the brake pads with friction material relative to the brake rotor to account for wear of the friction material and rotor during use of the brake. The adjustment mechanism typically has an input drive section in communication with the operating shaft such that when the separation between the friction material and the rotor becomes undesirabl...
