Abstract

A phacoemulsification system that includes a hand-graspable body and a phacoemulsification needle extending from a distal portion of the body is disclosed herein. The phacoemulsification system may also include an impeller pump carried by the hand-graspable body and configured to convey an aspiration fluid from a surgical site. The impeller pump may include an aspiration motor and a flexible impeller coupled to and rotatably driven by the aspiration motor. The flexible impeller may be arranged to aspirate fluid and emulsified lens tissue from the surgical site.

Description

technical field [0001] The devices, systems, and methods disclosed herein relate generally to phacoemulsification procedures. Background technique [0002] The function of the human eye is to provide vision by passing light through a transparent outer part called the cornea and focusing the image through the lens onto the retina. The quality of the focused image depends on many factors, including the size and shape of the eye, and the transparency of the cornea and lens. When aging or disease causes the lens to become less transparent, vision deteriorates because less light can be transmitted to the retina. This defect in the lens of the eye is medically known as a cataract. The accepted treatment for this condition is surgical removal of the lens and replacement of the lens function with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). [0003] In the United States, most cataractous lenses are removed through a surgical technique called phacoemulsification. A typical surgical hand...
