Abstract

Embodiments of the present invention provide a system and method for light and shadow guided needle positioning. A DICOM image of the patient is acquired to identify the insertion point of the needle on the patient's body and the target point within the patient's body. Needle coordinates were calculated based on the acquired DICOM images to position the robotic arm. Light is projected onto the needle at a specific angle to form a shadow of the needle. A laser beam is projected to form a reticle at the insertion point. An image or video of the insertion point, the shadow of the needle and the reticle is captured and displayed on a monitoring unit. An imaginary circle is projected onto the displayed image and is aligned with the insertion point, the needle's shadow and crosshairs for precise insertion of the needle.
