The device of the invention comprises a near infrared source, a silicon photocell, an operational amplifier circuit, a data collection card, a PC host computer, a stepping motor, a sprayer, a single-chip microcomputer, a water pump and a water tank. The near infrared source irradiates plant leaves; the silicon photocell receives light intensity passing through the plant leaves; the operational amplifier circuit collects output voltage of the silicon photocell and inputs the output voltage to the data collection card after operational amplification, and the data collection card transmits the output voltage signal to the PC host computer; the PC host computer controls the stepping motor to complete scanning of plant occupied areas, calculates the number of plant overlapped leaves according to the output voltage signal and transmits leaf area index to the single-chip microcomputer after calculation of the leaf area index; and the single-chip microcomputer outputs a control instruction to the water pump according to the leaf area index signal value, and the water pump iscontrolled to draw water until the sprayer completes the spraying operation.
