Abstract

Power is supplied to an ignition device 10 from a generator 3 driven by an internal combustion engine 2. The ignition device 10 is provided with a control device 17. When a power supply voltage VB is below a prescribed threshold voltage, the control device 17 drives a switching element 32 using a switching signal having a comparatively long ON time TonL. When the power supply voltage VB is above the prescribed threshold voltage, the control device 17 drives the switching element 32 using a switching signal having a comparatively short ON time TonS. The ON time TonL is longer than the ON time TonS. The short ON time TonS suppresses current flowing to a circuit that contains a transformer 31. Protection from excess voltage is thereby achieved while maintaining the ignition function.
