The device comprises a voltage sensor, a current sensor, a sampling circuit, a signal processing circuit, a master control MCU, an arc fault alarm circuit, a switching value isolated output circuit, a thyristor drive circuit and a capacitance switching compensation main circuit. Current detection of a fault arc and a current detection part of reactive compensation are shared, a same detection signal is adopted, and a common master control unit is used for carrying out fault arc analysis and power factor calculation simultaneously, so that the device can be sampled before characteristic current of the fault arc is filtered, and accurate detection of the fault arc is guaranteed. According to the fault arc detection method, by using the judgment result of current difference parameters as a premise, harmonic ratio change rate is adopted for judging the fault arc, so that the interference of a nonlinear load can be effectively eliminated, meanwhile four judgment methods are adopted for carrying out judgment, and the fault arc is accurately detected.
