The lenses of the optical system meet the following conditions: -0.2<f / f1<-0.09; -0.25<f / f2<-0.15; -0.3<f / f3<-0.19; 0.17<f / f4<0.23; 0.02<f / f5<0.07; 0.11<f / f67<0.18; and 0.12<f / f8<0.31. The other embodiment of the invention discloses an image pickup module. The embodiments of the invention are applicable to the fields of panoramic VR cameras and 360-degree dead-zone-free monitoring. The number of the lenses is moderate, and the structure is simple. Moreover, the ultra-wide image pickup optical system and the image pickup module have excellent performances of 240-degree ultra-wide field and eight megapixels.
