Problems solved by technology

[0003] The difficulty, however, is that the process of identifying and saving movie moments while capturing such moments and associated viewer reactions often requires replaying the moments (since viewer reactions only become available after those movie moments are viewed )
This need to replay media content can cause interruptions in the viewing experience and loss of spontaneity in viewer responses (i.e. viewers may not respond to the replayed moment in the same way as the original moment)

Embodiment Construction

[0040] Embodiments described herein provide techniques for capturing a media content item or a portion thereof (eg, a snapshot or a video clip) based on a viewer's expression. For example, in some embodiments, after capturing (e.g., with a camera) an image of a viewer showing a recognizable emotion / expression, the set-top box or connected television automatically captures it without the viewer's intervention but with the viewer's prior consent. A short (eg 5 second) segment of the media content (eg movie or TV show) the viewer is watching at the time the emotion is captured. For example, the captured expression may be one of horror that the viewer is watching while watching a thriller movie such as Psycho. In some implementations, one or more captured expressions of the viewer are stored along with the corresponding media content segment. Thus, after watching the media item, the viewer can review his / her reaction (eg, a scary face) and the associated movie segment (eg, a scar...

Abstract

The invention discloses a system and a method for capturing the emotion of a user during viewing particular media content. The method implemented on a computer system having one or more processors and memory includes detecting display of a media content item, e.g. a video clip, an audio clip, a photo or text message. While the media content item is being displayed, the viewer expression e.g. emotion is detected corresponding to a predefined viewer expression i.e. by using a database to compare the expressions with each other; as well as the identifying a portion of the media content item (e.g. the scene of the video clip) that corresponds with the viewer's expression i.e. emotion. The viewer expression or emotion is based on one of: a facial expression, a body movement, a voice, or an arm, leg or finger gesture and is presumed to be a viewer reaction to the portion of the media content item.

Description

technical field [0001] Embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to capturing media content based on viewer expressions. Background technique [0002] Currently, there is increasing interest in identifying and capturing moments of media content that are of particular interest to individual users. For example, a viewer may want to save memorable or classic moments in a movie he or she is watching, and then share those moments via social media applications or bookmark them for later reference. Furthermore, viewers may sometimes wish to review snapshots of those moments that correspond to particular emotional responses. For example, a viewer may want to review / save media moments that the user finds particularly poignant, inspirational, or funny. [0003] The difficulty, however, is that the process of identifying and saving movie moments while capturing such moments and associated viewer reactions often requires replaying the moments (since viewer reactions only ...
