Problems solved by technology

However, because neuropathic pain is a debilitating and difficult-to-treat condition, TCAs, despite their drawbacks, have been used in the absence of agents with less deleterious effects

Embodiment 1

[0141] Example 1. Diabetic neuropathic pain model

[0142] Diabetic neuropathic pain was modeled with streptozotocin, which targets and kills pancreatic islet beta cells, thereby rendering the animals type I diabetic. Rats were acclimatized for one hour and tested for baseline thresholds prior to induction of diabetes. Baseline mechanical withdrawal thresholds were established using the von Frey mechanical nociceptive test (IITC, Woodland Hills, CA) with an electronic anesthesiometer. Subsequently, streptozotocin (55 mg / kg) in saline was infused via the tail vein as previously reported (Aley, K.O. and Levine J.D.J. Pain 2001, 2, 146.). Five days later, allodynia in diabetic rats was confirmed by von Frey nocimetry. Rats were placed in a clear acrylic chamber on a wire mesh floor. The rat's hind paw was probed through the wire mesh with a rigid tip probe connected to an electronic readout manometer set to the maximum hold setting. The withdrawal threshold of each rat was ...

Abstract

Provided are methods for treating, reducing, alleviating, and / or inhibiting neuropathic pain by orally, intravenously or intrathecally administering an effective amount of an inhibitor of soluble epoxide hydrolase ("sEH"), to a patient in need thereof. The neuropathic pain treated is selected from the group consisting of post-herpetic neuralgia, trigeminal neuralgia, focal peripheral nerve injury, and anesthesia dolorosa, central pain due to stroke or mass lesion, spinal cord injury, or multiple sclerosis, and peripheral neuropathy due to diabetes, HIV, or chemotherapy.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Application No. 61 / 593,811 filed February 1, 2012, which is incorporated herein in its entirety for all purposes. [0003] Statement Concerning Rights to Inventions Made Under Federally Sponsored Research or Development [0004] This invention was made with government support under grant number ES002710 awarded by the Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. The government has certain rights in this invention. Background of the invention [0005] Pain is generally divided into nociceptive pain and neuropathic pain. Nociceptive pain responds to tissue damage or signals potential tissue damage from neural pathways and includes inflammatory pain. Neuropathic pain is often associated with dysfunction within the nervous system. Unfortunately, what works for one type of pain doesn't necessarily work for the other. For example, anti-inflammatory agents do not reduce the...
