Embodiment Construction

[0021] As used herein, the singular forms "a", "an" and "the" include plural referents unless the context clearly dictates otherwise. As used herein, the statement that two or more parts or components are "coupled" shall mean that the parts are joined together, directly or indirectly (i.e., through one or more intermediate parts or components, whenever a connection occurs) or work together. As used herein, "directly coupled" means that two elements are in direct contact with each other. As used herein, "fixedly coupled" or "fixed" means that two components are coupled so as to move as one while maintaining a fixed orientation relative to each other.

[0022] As used herein, the word "unitary" means that a component is created as a single piece or unit. That is, a component that includes multiple pieces that are created separately and then coupled together as a unit is not a "unitary" component or body. Abstract

A method of assisting a patient with airway clearance includes providing a positive pressure insufflation gas flow to the patient during an insufflation phase, following completion of the insufflation phase, causing the patient to enter an expiratory hold condition wherein the patient is prevented from exhaling, providing an abdominal thrust to the patient while the patient is in the expiratory hold condition, terminating the expiratory hold condition, and following termination of the expiratory hold condition, providing a negative pressure exsufflation gas flow to the patient during an exsufflation phase.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This patent application claims priority under 35 U.S.C. §119(e) to U.S. Provisional Application No. 61 / 502,357, filed June 29, 2011, the contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to methods and devices for assisting a subject in clearing his or her airway (ie, coughing), and in particular, to an insufflation air method and device including an exhalation hold feature synchronized with manually assisted coughing. Background technique [0004] Coughing, also known as "airway clearance," is a normal function of everyday life for most people. figure 1 Typical cough sequences of healthy individuals who are able to cough normally are plotted in . Such as figure 1 As shown in , during the inspiratory phase, inhaled gas is slowly (eg, less than 1 LPS) drawn into the lungs through the trachea. Then, during the compression phase, the glottis covering the indi...
