[0038] The invention relates to controlling the drive train of a hybrid vehicle. Such as Figure 1-3 As shown, the hybrid vehicle may include an engine and an electric motor. During the operation of the vehicle, the engine may or may not be operated with a powertrain integrated starter / generator (for example, an electric motor or a motor that may be referred to as DISG for short). The drive train integrated starter / generator is engaged into the drive train on the same axis as the engine crankshaft and rotates whenever the torque converter pump wheel rotates. Furthermore, the DISG may not selectively engage or disengage from the drive train. Rather, the DISG is an integral part of the drive train. Also, the DISG can be operated with or without the engine running. When the DISG is not running, the mass and inertia of the DISG belong to the drive train to provide or absorb the torque from the drive train.
