Embodiment Construction

[0020] Particle-based fluid simulation methods, such as Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH), can be used to realize interactive fluid simulations. To provide simulation while maintaining the speed of interaction, virtual particles are created that represent one or more particles per cell. For interactivity, the simulation is typically updated on a per-cycle (in milliseconds) basis. Therefore, calculations of fluid interactions are performed efficiently to maintain the interaction speed. An efficient approach for SPH at interaction velocities could be to replace the multiple fluid particles per cell with larger virtual particles. Replacement virtual particles are used to compute the contribution of particles not within a cell to the interaction with a given fluid particle within that cell. SPH implementations can be faster than existing technologies and suitable for interactive applications while providing similar simulation quality. The smoothing distance can be decreased...

Abstract

The invention relates to simplified smoothed particle hydrodynamics. For efficient smooth particle hydrodynamics using more particle information, virtual particles are created. Each virtual particle represents an averaging of properties for the fluid particles in a cell. For density, force, or other calculations for a given fluid particle, the interaction between the particles within a cell are calculated. For calculating the influence of particles outside the cell on the particle in the cell, the virtual particles from the neighboring cells are used. The interaction with these aggregate particles reduces the number of calculations while still including the influence from particles of other cells.

Description

[0001] related application [0002] This patent text claims rights under 35 U.S.C. §119(e) to the filing date of Provisional US Patent Application No. 61 / 482,654, filed May 5, 2011, which is hereby incorporated by reference. technical field [0003] This embodiment relates to particle based fluid simulation. In Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH), computational fluid simulations are based on Monte Carlo methods. Internal forces are calculated between particle pairs. For example, the density is calculated as , where i and j are neighboring particles, m is the mass, r is the radius, h is the radius of the smooth that limits the interaction on the range, and W is the kernel function. pressure is calculated as [0004] . Viscosity force is calculated as [0005] . These forces are used to simulate advecting of particles. Over several iterations, the velocity is calculated as [0006] , and the position is calculated as [0007] . Background technique [000...
